Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 16, 1911 and confirmed on December 2nd, 1975.
The tower already appears on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from the late 13th century. The typical shape of the tower was unchanged during the centuries.
The present arms were granted in 1911 in the colours of Preussen (or Köln, as the city belonged from the 13th century until 1803 to Köln, and until 1945 to Preussen), black and white, but in 1700 the colours were mentioned as gold in red.
