Origin/meaning
The star is taken from the arms of the Lords of Hewen, who owned the city until 1398, when it became a possession of Austria. The star already appears in the oldest known seal of the city, which dates from the late 14th century. The colours are known since 1591.
The present arms were based on this seal and granted in 1960. From 1898-1960 the city used arms divided of silver and gold with the star in opposite colours. The wrong colours were derived from the arms of the Lords of Fürstenberg, but these never ruled the city.
