BIRKENAU

State : Hessen
District (Kreis) : Bergstrasse
Additions : 1970 Hornbach, Kallstadt, Reisen; 1971 Löhrbach, Nieder-Liebersbach

Wappen von Birkenau

Official blazon

In Rot eine silberne mit silbernem Maueranker belegte entwurzelte Birke.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 22, 1926.

The canting birch (Birke) already appeared on the oldest known seals of the town, dating from 1591. The symbol in front of the tree is of unknown origin. It may have been used as a village symbol. It is not clear what it actually represents; it has been described as a wolf's-hook, a wall anchor or a letter H. The red and silver colours are the colours of the State of Mainz, to which the area historically belonged.
