Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1901 and are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1281. The key is the symbol of St. Peter, the patron saint of Trier, to which the town belonged. The Archbishops of Trier granted the city rights in 1275. The later seals also showed the key between churches. From a secret seal, dating from the 14th century, the real city arms developed. These show the cross of Trier with the key of St. Peter as an escutcheon. These arms, however were not confirmed in 1901.
