Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1954.

The arms show the (older) arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg from the Hohenzollern dynasty. Langenzenn received city rights from the Margraves of Nürnberg around 1368 and their arms appear in the first seal of the city. Later the whole arms (including helmet and crest) were placed on a shield, creating arms on arms.

The arms remained the same until 1818, when the area became part of Bayern. At that time the Zollern colours were removed and the arms were quartered silver and blue, the colours of Bayern. Later in the 19th century the original black and silver were restored, see below. The complete arms were restored in 1954.
