German | Über dem grünen Schildfuß in Rot ein silbernes, mit zwei Türmen flankiertes Stadttor, dahinter ein grüner Eichbaum mit goldenen Eicheln. |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms are canting, an oak tree (Eiche) and a city gate (Stadt). The oldest seal of the city dates from the late 13th century and already shows the same composition. Later seals all show the same composition, but the size and shape of the gate and the tree differ widely. The present colours are used since 1819.
From the 15th century onwards the arms for the city were rather different; a blue chevron on a silver (later divided gold on divided silver-blue) shield. These arms were used at the same time as the composition with the tree. Only in the early 19th century the chevron disappeared.
