Wappen von Rust (Ortenaukreis)

Official blazon

In gespaltenem Schild vorne in Blau ein steigender, linksgewendeter silberner Fisch, hinten in Rot eine goldene Pflugschar.

Origin/meaning

The arms were designed by the State Archives of Baden in 1898.

The combination of a fish and a plough iron appeared for the first time on the seal of the village from 1703 and again in seals from the 19th century. In 1898 the State Archives proposed the arms based on this seal in the colours of Baden (red /gold) and silver/blue as the most appropriate for a fish in water.

The arms probably indicate the importance of fishing in the Rhine river and agriculture in the municipality. The local fishermen are mentioned in the 12th century and the local fishermen's guild is known since the 1580s. The seal of the fishermen's guild showed an anchor flanked by two downwards swimming fish. The text on the seal stated DIE FISCHERZUNF D FLECKENS RUST.
