Origin/meaning

The town got city rights in 1288 by Count Adolf von Berg. The seal used from that day showed a church, the contraseal showed a double-tailed lion, derived from the arms of Von Berg.
In a 16th century seal the lion is shown for the first time with an anchor. Ever since the seals and arms of the town showed the lion and an anchor. The position of the anchor changed several times through the centuries, as did the colour. The anchor simply refers to the importance of shipping on the Rhine river.

The present arms date from 1868. The additions of 1974 did not change the arms.
