Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 8, 1994.

The arms show a stork a typical bird in the village as is already nests on the local castle since medieval times. The bird holds an ear of barley as a canting element (barley=Gerste). The combination of stork and barley appeared for the first time in the 18th century on the local seals. The wavy bend symbolises the Werra river and the green shield the green fields surrounding the river. The division of the bend in three parts symbolises the three villages, Gerstungen, Neustädt and Sallmannshausen in the municipality.
