Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 18, 1476 by Philipp Count of Henneberg and Bishop of Bamberg.

The arms simply show a fortified city wall for the city itself and a small river, the Schorgast. The arms were not much used in the 18th and 19^th century, but were formally restored in 1953, as many different variations exist, such as the one shown by Hupp in the 1920s.
