Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on December 9, 2004.
The arms show a fortified city wall with two towers, and in between the towers a black bear. The bear is the symbol for Anhalt. The composition already appeared on the 14th century seals of the city.
In the 1920s the arms were shown with the bear facing (heraldic) left, instead of facing right. During DDR times the bear was facing right again, but the colours were different, see below. Also the 1920s image shows the bear uncrowned.
