Origin/meaning

The oldest seals of Saarburg date from the 14th century and already show a castle or fortress with a small shield with a cross. The castle indicates the importance of the city as one of the main fortresses of the State of Trier from 1059-1794. Saarburg received city rights in 1291. The small shield shows the arms of the State of Trier. The base of the arms shows some waves, symbolising the Saar river. All later seals and images show a similar composition, but the size and shape of the buildings varies widely during the centuries.
