Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of the city dates from 1277 and shows, as does the next seal, an image of Charlemagne. He supposedly founded and named the city. His image appeared on different seals until the 18th century. Since 1544 the city, however, used as arms a quartered shield, most likely derived from the banner of the State of Würzburg, to which the city belonged. The two fleur-de-lis were added in the early 19th century, as a symbol for Charlemagne.
