Wappen von Herrieden

Official blazon

In Rot ein hockender goldener Hase, der einen aufrechten silbernen Bischofsstab hält.

Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal of the city, dating from around 1350, already shows already the hare and crosier. The town had grown around the Herrieden Abbey, hence the crosier. The old name of the Abbey was Hasenried, and the hare is thus a canting element (Hase). The crosier also indicates the fact that the city was a possession of the Bishops of Eichstätt until 1803.
