Official blazon

In Grün ein gelehnter, von Silber und Schwarz gevierter Schild, darauf ein silberner Helm; Helmzier ein rot gezungter goldener Brackenkopf mit rotem Ohr, unten verlängert zu einer goldenen und roten Helmdecke.

Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal probably dates from the early 14^th century, but is known since 1347. The seal shows the complete arms of the Hohenzollern family, with the quartered shield and the dog as crest. The city was a possession of the family.

In the late 15^th century and early 16^th century, only the quartered shield was mentioned as arms for the city. Also in 1819 the city adopted only the quartered shield. In the middle of the 19^th century the helmet and crest were again added and the arms have not changed since.
