Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal of the city, which dates from the early 14th century already shows a tower. On the oldest seal the tower was flanked by two small shields, showing the arms of the Lords of Münzenberg-Falkenstein, who at the time ruled the city. When the city was acquired by the Counts of Hanau, one of the shields was replaced by the shield with the red chevrons of Hanau. The new composition was first used in 1470.
