Origin/meaning

The arms show the (canting) keys of the arms of the Prince-Bishops of Minden and the fleur-de-lis of the arms of Bishop Wilhelm von dem Bussche. The town was a stronghold of the bishops against the counts of Hoya and was granted partly city rights by Bishop Wilhelm in 1400. The town became a full city in 1719. The arms are granted on December 23, 1907 and are based on a 15th century seal of Schlüsselburg.
