Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from around 1400. The seal was used until the early 1700's. Later seals and also the mayor's chain show the same knight, probably St. George, as can be seen from the cross on the small shield. St. George is also the patron saint of the city. During the last century the knight was sometimes placed on a small hill and the banner has been shown flying to the other direction. The present arms are in use since 1965.
