Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1430. The seal was granted by Mechthild von Baden, wife of Heinrich XI Count of Henneberg. The seal showed the same composition as the above arms, but in the gate the arms of Baden and Henneberg were seen. Later seals only showed the Henneberg arms. The castle most likely refers to the Bertholdsburg in the city, a possession of the Counts of Henneberg.
