Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on September 14, 1973.

The arms are a combination of the cross of the State of Köln and the bar of the State of Münster. The city was ruled jointly by the Bishops of Köln and Münster from 1252-1352. The seals of the city showed the two patron saints (St. Peter and St. Paul) until the 17th century, when they were replaced by the arms of Köln and Münster.

The saints were still used as supporters though, but in the 19th and early 20th century the supporters are hardly used.
