Origin/meaning
The arms are first seen on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1374. The upper half of the arms show a panther, derived from the Counts of Spanheim, who ruled the area until 1248. The lower half shows the arms of the Wittelsbach family, Dukes of Bayern, and successors of the Counts of Spanheim.
