Origin/meaning
The Provostry of Berchtesgaden was established in 1559 as the secular successor state of the Abbey of Berchtesgaden with the rank of Principality. The provostry was led by a prince-provost and a chapter consisting of noble canons and vicars. In 1803 it was incorporated into Bayern. Many of the Prince-Provosts were also bishop of one or more dioceses.
