Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 21, 1981.
The arms show a stork, as it is one of the few places in the State of Schleswig-Holstein with a large stork population. The birds mainly feed in the marshlands around the Treene river, which is symbolised by the wavy blue bend.
The Viking trading ship refers to the fact that during Viking times a large Viking trading centre was located in the current municipality. Goods were transported from the North Sea and Treene and then from here to the main trading port of Haithabu on the Baltic coast.
