Origin/meaning
Until 1803 the town was a possession of the local Benedictan Free Abbey (Reichsstift) and thus did not have its own seals or arms. In 1818 the local seal showed a bear, as derived from Ursin, a wrong origin of the name. In 1836 the above arms were proposed, based on the arms of the Lords of Ramschwag, who were related to the patrons of the Abbey. The arms were officially granted on July 15, 1837.
