Origin/meaning

The city initially used the golden lion on black taken from the Lords of Plauen, who ruled most of the Vogtland area in medieval times, see f.e Auerbach (Vogtland) and Plauen. in the 14th century the city became a possession of the Wettin family as part of the Margraviate of Meissen. Ever since the city uses the arms of the Margraviate, a black lion on gold.
