Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1908 and are based on the seals used from 1536 until the 19th century. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Nassau, who ruled the city for a long time, and who granted the city rights in 1287. The oldest seals, known since the late 13th century and used until the 16th century, only showed the arms of Nassau.

The colours have differed widely during the centuries, and in the early 20th century the lion was facing left instead of right as in the present arms (see below).
