Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1908 and are based on the seals used from 1536 until the 19^th century. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Nassau, who ruled the city for a long time, and who granted the city rights in 1287. The oldest seals, known since the late 13^th century and used until the 16^th century, only showed the arms of Nassau.

The colours have differed widely during the centuries, and in the early 20^th century the lion was facing left instead of right as in the present arms (see below).
