Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the town, dating from 1813. The lion is the lion of Hessen holding a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Hanau. Historically the town was a possession of the Counts of Hanau and was later acquired by Hessen-Kassel.
