ITZEHOE

State : Schleswig-Holstein
District (Kreis) : Steinburg
Additions : 1911 Kratt, Sude; 1963 Edendorf

Wappen von Itzehoe

Official blazon

In Rot über blauen Wellen auf einer durchgehenden silbernen Mauer zwei spitzbedachte silberne Zinnentürme mit geschlossenem Tor; zwischen den Turmdächern ein silbernes Nesselblatt.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 26, 1938.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, dating from the middle of the 14th century. Itzehoe had received city rights in 1238 from Count Adolf IV of Holstein. The seal showed a city wall with two towers, rising from a sea, and between the towers a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Holstein (Nesselblatt or nettle-leaf). In the present arms the Nesselblatt appears without the shield.
