Origin/meaning

The arms date from 1544 and show in the first quarter St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the city. The second quarter shows the lion of ?

The lower part shows a zinc miner. Zinc mining started in the area around 1400 and is still of importance to the city. Previously the city showed the arms with the same composition, but in different colours. The lion was a black lion for Meissen, as the city was part of Sachsen-Meissen.
