The oldest seal of the city dates from the 14<sup>th</sup> century and shows the local patron saint St. Bonifatius, with a small shield with the arms of Fulda (black cross), as the city was part of the State of Fulda. In the 19<sup>th</sup> century the local seals showed a plough iron and a staff of Mercury, symbolising agriculture and trade. Origin/meaning
