Bräunlingen received city rights in 1295 from the Counts of Fürstenberg. From 1305-1803 the city was an Austrian possession. The oldest seal of the city, dating from 1305 shows already the lion of the Habsburg family, Dukes (later Emperors) of Austria. All later seals and images show the lion, sometimes with a double-tail, but otherwise the arms have not changed since.
