Origin/meaning

The County Bentheim was a medium sized county located in the present-day German state of Niedersachsen near the current Dutch border. The largest part is the current district of Grafschaft Bentheim It existed as an independent territory from 1454-1495 as Lordship and from 1495 to 1806 as a county, when it was mediatised to the Grand-Duchy of Berg. Capital was the city of Bentheim.

The arms are those of the Lords, later Counts and Princes, of Bentheim (1050-present).
