Official blazon

In Blau ein gerüsteter Reiter auf goldgezäumtem silbernem Ross, mit silbernem Schwert seinen roten Umhang teilend, unten von einem kleinen blauen Schild mit einem gekrönten goldenen Löwen begleitet.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1993, but the composition already dates from the oldest seal of the city, known from 1368.

The arms show St. Martin, the local patron saint, with in the base the arms of the Counts of Schwarzburg, who ruled the city until 1918.
