Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1836 and are based on a local legend. During the 30-years war the village was completely depopulated. Two brothers thus had to work the land on their own to restore the village life. The upper half simply shows the town's name.

Prior to 1836 the town used completely different arms on its seals. The oldest known seal dates from 1491 and shows three so-called wolf's hooks. These were placed in a shield and the composition was used as arms and on seals until 1836. These arms were derived from the arms of the Lords of Stain, who ruled the town since 1469.
