Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 12, 1956.

The arms show in the first quarter the arms of the Wittelsbach family, Counts of the Palatinate and Kings of Bayern. The second quarter shows the importance of the town as a harbour on the Rhein river. The third and fourth quarters show symbols of the agriculture and mining respectively.

The seals of the city always showed different compositions. The oldest seal, known since 1315, shows St. Nicolas behind a city wall. Later St. Theonest replaced St. Nicolas as the patron saint of the city. Other, smaller seals only showed the diamond of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
