Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1603 to the town that was founded only in 1538, after iron ore was found.

The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, with mining tools. Mining was important for many years. Until the middle of the 20th century the design was rather different, the present arms were based on the oldest known seal.
