LUCKENWALDE

State : Brandenburg
District (Kreis) : Teltow-Fläming
Additions : 1993 Frankenfelde, Kolzenburg

Wappen von Luckenwalde

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 3, 1996.

Luckenwalde historically belonged to the Zinna Abbey, which is symbolized by the crosiers and, in the old arms (see below) the mitre. The meaning of the stars is not known. In the middle of the 20th century the mitre was replaced by a pine tree, as a canting element (Wald=forest).

The pelican is taken from the oldest seals of the city, is a religious element and symbolises the care of the council for the people in the city. The oldest seals, dating from the 15th century, show the crosiers and the eagle of Brandenburg. In the 17th century the eagle was shown as a pelican. Later the pelican, now feeding his young in a nest, was used as the arms of the city. In the 19th century the arms below appeared, with the pelican as a crest. In 1996 the pelican was incorporated onto the shield.
