Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 2, 1991.

The arms show in the four quarters the arms of the main historical regions and rulers to which parts of the district belonged. The first quarter shows a mill-iron, taken from the arms of the city of Mühlhausen. The lion in the second quarter is the lion of Thüringen, the lion in the third quarter is the lion of Schwarzburg, as parts of the district belonged to the County Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The wheel of the State of Mainz refers to the Eichsfeld region, which belonged to Mainz and to which several villages in the district belonged.

The previous arms of the district were adopted in 1950.

These show in the upper part a plough for agriculture and in the lower a farmer's shoe (or Bundschuh), the symbol for the farmers in the German Peasant's War (1524-1526), as also in the region around Mühlhausen the farmers revolted.

Another proposal from 1949 showed the arms of the city of Mühlhausen in the upper half and the shoe in the lower.

The oldest arms of the district were adopted in 1936 and have the same composition as the arms of 1991, but in a more complicated form.

The first quarter showed the arms of the city of Mühlhausen, not only the iron. The second quarter refers to the Eichsfeld region, the fourth quarter shows again the lion of Thüringen. The third quarter shows the arms of Sachsen, for the parts that belonged to Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha as well as to the fact that in 1936 the district belonged to the Prussian province of Sachsen.
