The arms were officially granted on March 19, 1987.

The upper half shows the griffin of Pommern holding a crosier. These refer to the former rulers, the Princes of Pommern(-Wolgast) and the Eldena Abbey near Greifswald. The lower half symbolises agriculture and fisheries.
