Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 3, 1990.

The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged : the lion of the County of Meissen, the arms of the Lords of Sonneberg in the second quarter, in the third quarter the arms of the Counts of Schaumberg-Rauenstein and in the fourth quarter the arms of Sachsen.

The arms were based on the previous arms of the district, used until 1952 (see below). When the arms were adopted is not known, probably in the 1920s. The only difference with the present arms is the first quarter, which shows the rooster from the Henneberg County, to which parts of the district belonged in the 13th-16th century.
