The city historically was a possession of the Bishops of Meissen. The city was burned down in 1429 and subsequently restored by the bishops. The seal of the city from the late 15<sup>th</sup> century thus shows a bishop and a city gate. All later seals and images have used the same composition, but the size, shape and colours have changed.
