Origin/meaning

The town of Wangen was founded in 1217 by Emperor Friedrich II, and got city rights in 1286. From 1347-1802 it was a Reichsstadt (imperial city). The original arms only showed the fleur-the-lis. The eagle (the imperial symbol) was added at a later time, but probably around or before 1300. The oldest known seal with both symbols dates from 1322. The heads, with emphasized cheeks (canting, Wangen, meaning cheeks), were added a bit later. Around 1550 other arms were used officially, showing an imperial eagle, bearing on his chest a red shield with a golden letter W.
