Unter rotem Schildhaupt, darin drei linksgewendete bartlose silberne Männerköpfe (Wangen) nebeneinander, gespalten; vorne in Silber ein halber, rot bewehrter und rot bezungter schwarzer Adler am Spalt, hinten in Silber eine blaue Lilie.

Origin/meaning

The town of Wangen was founded in 1217 by Emperor Friedrich II, and got city rights in 1286. From 1347-1802 it was a Reichsstadt (imperial city). The original arms only showed the fleur-the-lis. The eagle (the imperial symbol) was added at a later time, but probably around or before 1300. The oldest known seal with both symbols dates from 1322. The heads, with emphasized cheeks (canting, Wangen, meaning cheeks), were added in the 17^th century. Around 1550 other arms were used officially, showing an imperial eagle, bearing on his chest a red shield with a golden letter W.
