Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on January 12, 1949.
The main division of the arms shows the two rivers Werra and Fulda that join the Weser in the district. The striped lion is the lion of Hessen, as the Counts of Hessen historically ruled part of the district. The golden lion is the arms of the Welfen dynasty, who also ruled part of the district. One of their branches, the Dukes of Lüneburg, is represented by their crest in the lower part of the arms.
Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
