KERPEN

State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
District (Kreis) : Rhein-Erft Kreis (until 1975 Bergheim)
Additions: 1975 Amt Buir, Amt Horrem, Amt Kerpen, Blatzheim, Buir, Horrem (partly), Manheim, Mödrath, Sindorf (partly), Türnich

Wappen von Kerpen/Arms (crest) of Kerpen
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1938.

The two lions are the combined lions of Brabant and Limburg, as the town was a possession of the Dukes of Brabant.

The oldest seal which is known since 1306, showed the two lions in a quartered shield above a city wall. Later seals show only the patron saint, St.Martin. The tower in the new arms symbolises the Imperial castle built in the 12th century in the town.

In the 1920s the arms showed two canting carp, see image below.
