Origin/meaning

Bruchsal was a village in a large estate, which was given to the Bishops of Speyer in 1056. In the late 13th century Bruchsal received city rights. The city remained part of the State of Speyer until 1803.

The oldest known arms appear on the seal of 1270 and show already the cross of the State of Speyer. The small ball in the first quarter appears in the 15th century and was added to distinguish the arms from those of the State of Speyer. The arms have thus not changed since.
