Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 6, 1979.

Wallerfangen is the oldest city in Saarland, it got city righths in the late 13th century from Duke Friedrich III of Lorraine. It lost its importance in the 17th century after the building of the fortress in Saarlouis. The arms are based on the oldest known seal, dating from 1614.

The cross is the cross of Lorraine (see also Merzig), the symbol is the middle is a mill-iron (Mühleisen), the origin of the star is not known. It has been stated that it is the symbol of the local court.

The arms have not changed since 1614, but in the 19th century a mural crown has sometimes been used.
