Origin/meaning

The town of Weissenkirchen was bought in 1348 by the Margraves of Nürnberg, who granted the city rights in 1853 and renamed the city to Weissenstadt. The oldest seal dates only from 1465 and shows the complete arms of the Hohenzollern family (as Margraves of Nürnberg), a quartered shield, with helmet and as a crest a dog. In 1819 the black and silver quarters were changed into blue and silver, the colours of Bayern. In 1836 the old arms, including helmet and crest, were restored. The city still sometimes uses the helmet and crest.
