German | In Schwarz ein von Rot und Silber zweireihig geschachter Balken, darüber nebeneinander zwei goldene Helmkronen. |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the arms of the counts of Sponheim. The counts owned the town and granted city rights in 1305. The family lost the city in 1437. The arms of the counts of Sponheim showed the chequered bar. The two crowns are added for the town and supposedly symbolise the rule of the two counts Simon and Heinrich who ruled the city together. The arms already appeared on the seals of the city from the early 15th century.
