Wappen von Netzschkau/Arms (crest) of Netzschkau
Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms are known from an 17th century seal of the city (city rights on August 7, 1687) and have a religious meaning, the Lord providing the strength for the development of the new city (symbolised by watering the tree). The seals also showed a legend : Durch Gottes reichen Segen und meiner obern Pflege.

The composition only appears as city arms in the 19th century. The figure on the official images was seen by the Nazi government in 1937 as 'typical Jewish' and thus the composition had to be changed, at least the figure got more 'properly' dressed. Also, the previously undefined tree, was now shown as a linden tree, probably based on the large linden on the town square.

Since the 1990s the arms are shown base don the original seal; the gardener has again a beard and the tree is no longer clearly a linden.

The colours have differed widely during the centuries and were formally defined in 1897.
